Theology for Dummies

Ralph McInerny:

All too briefly we were permitted to savor the image of the Speaker of the House poring over the writings of St. Augustine in the watches of the night, looking for things of which the Bishop of Hippo had been unsure. Always mindful of the public, she did not keep her findings to herself. In an impromptu lecture to the press, she opined that she could tap into the putative Augustinian ignorance and go on killing babies and be as good a Catholic as he. Seemingly San Francisco had made her an honorary STD.

And then, mirabile dictu, the chiding voices of bishops were heard. Not one, not two, but half a dozen, perhaps more. Admonishing bishops have become almost as rare as theologians in Congress, but here we had corrective statements remarkable for their pith and point. There is no cover in Catholic doctrine for abortion, any more than there is in natural law.

Where did Nancy Pelosi come by the notion that she could offer alternatives to “official” doctrine and that this was actually the Catholic thing to do? Where would she have acquired the confidence that abortion is a live option, that everyone could just follow his own “conscience,” that moral absolutes are no more? The answer is simple. She is a typical product of Catholic education.

The rest.

With the Harper Tories in Canada AND the McCain / Palin Republicans in the US both headed for elections, we face the tragic possibility of having the Right Wing Religious Crazies calling the shots from the Mexican Border to the North pole .
The Right Wing Religious Crazies have Stephen Harper , ( Leader of the Canadian Conservative Party), in their back pocket. A Harper Majority government would follow the orders of the Religious Right and their hateful agenda , with no regard for the good of the country or personal freedoms.
Why fight the Taliban in Afganistan and then elect the Fundamentalist Christian version of the Taliban into power here ? I for one do not want to have Harper turn Canada into a Theocracy .ty

To Anon in (or near) Parry Sound:

First off, take a Valium and promise me you'll swear off Heather Malice for a few days - I can guarantee you'll immediately start to feel better. While you're waiting for the extreme paranoia to recede, you might even consider stepping outside your comfort zone and talking to a few conservatives. (I commend you on taking that first big step and posting a comment on my blog, even if it was just an embarrassingly predictable knee-jerk rant.) If you venture into the real world, you might even find a few conservatives - of both the fiscal and social type - who think that Harper has thrown them under the bus. You'll likely find a few others who think he walks on water. Then there's the rest - the majority I daresay - who agree with him on some issues and disagree with him - even vociferously - on others. And who are willing to duke it out according to their principles. That's democracy for ya - and that's the real world. Hope you'll join us there someday soon.
