The Canadian state is not a gigantic service club that we've all joined and pledged to advance the goals of. It's a coercive organization with a territorial monopoly. We can't just up and quit if we find the state is doing something morally repugnant. Individual recipients of the Order of Canada can resign in protest if they can't tolerate being lumped in with some new recipient, but the rest of us have no such option available to make our distaste known.
Although those in the pro-abortion crowd are often flatly inconsistent in their views, this is not the reason to withhold the Order of Canada from Henry Morgentaler. Rather, the Order of Canada should be abolished, because its only purpose is to reward those who best serve the state.
Your opinion is not self-explanatory - care to share exactly why you think this is so? Selick and Lemieux were not spiteful, and gave carefully reasoned explanations for their positions.
In your referenced column by Karen Selick, she also stated:
"those who make the awards to such people, are simply bullies, shoving their opinions down the throats of those with no power to resist"
I agree.
It has been reported that the rules for the award for the abortionist were modified to circumvent the usual process requiring unanimity. If this is true, it reinforces the thesis that the award was shoved down our throats.
The Order of Canada awarding process has mutated into cynically manipulated political tool of the left, a process that is in serious need of revision.
In the mean time, perhaps the gap to satiate the left-wing loons can be filled with a privately dispensed "Order of Trudeaupia".

What a ridiculous, spiteful reaction.
Red,

Aek,
Yes, it appears that the unanimity process was suspended in order to force this appointment thru.
"Order of Trudeaupia" - I like it - it has a much more honest ring to it.
